Founded in 1997 when two Tampere-based dance companies, Mobita (1972) and Dansco (1988), united, Dance Theatre MD has been a staple of downtown Tampere for 25 years. Originally located in the landmark Frenckell building, a former paper mill, MD found a fabulous new home just a couple of blocks down the citys main street in 2002, when a local movie house vacated the glorious Hällä venue, a lovely place with a wonderful sense of the past.

During our first quarter century we have provided our audiences with a total of 107 productions including 84 originals, 23 collaborations with theatre and opera companies and other artists, 18 family-friendly shows and two performances for young adults. And we will keep on providing contemporary dance for all ages, grounded in movement, blooming with emotion. We will keep on putting smiles on people’s faces and bringing tears to their eyes.

Our 25th anniversary is highlighted by four premieres. Beginning March 9, Samuli Roininen revisits the mysterious black prisms of his 2019 work Ghost Visitors in a solo installation called Ghost Drafts. March 26 marks the premiere of Mari Rosendahl’s Igloo, a kid-friendly contemporary dance piece that takes us on an exhilarating adventure in Antarctica with Buzika the penguin and friends. Hitting the stage on August 27, Panu Varstala’s Human-namuH is a solo piece for Anniina Kumpuniemi, who also celebrates her 25-year career as an artist. Wrapping up the big year, Petri Kekoni’s Counting time premieres on November 26.

Of course there’s more than the premieres. A jubilee exhibition at Werstas Museum’s Komuutti venue opens on November 1. Packed with posters, photos and videos from two and a half decades, the exhibit will be running until January 8, 2023. MD’s spring lineup also features two kids’ favorites available streamed at keikalla.fi, My Friend Little Fuzzy Buzzer and The Adventures of Sam the Frog. Streams are available 1.2.-31.3.2022.
